Governor Kelly proves that she isn’t middle of the road by vetoing the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act

Topeka, Kan.

March 17, 2023

Despite campaign statements to the contrary, Governor Kelly once again vetoed the common sense Fairness in Women’s Sports Act. It passed the House 82-40, with 3 members missing. It passed the Senate 28-11, with 1 member voting present.

Brittany Jones, Director of Policy and Engagement, Kansas Family Voice:

“Kansans know that boys should not play on girl’s teams. During the campaign, Governor Kelly tried to sound like she agreed with this statement but her actions once again show the exact opposite. Instead, she is supporting the very policy that allows boys to be on girls’ team in Kansas. By vetoing the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act, she is rejecting the common sense policy that would have ensured fairplay for Kansas girls.

While the legislature has been unable to override her vetoes in the past, both chambers now have the necessary number of votes to override her veto. If Governor Kelly won’t stand up for Kansas girls, then the legislature will have to do it themselves. It’s long past time that we got this done.”
