Topeka, Kan.—Today, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly appointed K. Christopher Jayaram as the next Kansas Supreme Court Justice. He will fill the vacancy created by Chief Judge Marla Luckert’s retirement. Judge Jayaram is currently a Johnson County District judge who was appointed by Governor Kelly.
Statement by Brittany Jones, Esq., President, Kansas Family Voice:
“The selection of Judge Jayaram only highlights how out of touch our current judicial selection process is. Over the last several years, I have watched Judge Jayram make rulings based on political bias and not on the law. I have seen him ignore or rewrite some of the most basic rules of civil procedure. He does not reflect the people of Kansas or this supposedly impartial court.
No matter the judge the Governor chose, the people had little to no say in this decision. A couple hundred attorneys chose the majority of the members on the panel. The others are political appointees, giving the people of Kansas little to no say in this process. A low information retention election does not cure this malady. When you add in strategically timed retirements, and even strategically timed appointments, the current process is cloaked in secrecy, elitism, and politics. It is time for the people to take back the bench.”
