We are just over two weeks out from the General Election. Early voting has begun in locations across the state. Depending on where you live, you are probably getting text messages, mailers, social media ads, and other attempts to sway your vote.

We keep getting reports about outright lies being told by the left and the abortion industry about votes that were taken last session. Interestingly these claims rarely, if ever, come with any sort of citation. I want you to have the truth and the citations.

Abortion reporting: Kansas has created reports on a variety of demographic figures, like childbirth and other health statistics for decades. The update that was passed to the abortion report last session places no burden on women. It simply ensures the people of Kansas get accurate and timely information about statistics around the abortion industry. These reports are anonymous and voluntary! This is not a threat to women.

IVF and Contraceptives:  When it comes to IVF and contraceptives, both are protected under Kansas law. Under the Kansas Statute (KS 65-6702), in vitro fertilization and contraception are protected in Kansas. The law says, “The use of any drug or device that inhibits or prevents ovulation, fertilization or implantation of an embryo and disposition of the product of in vitro fertilization prior to implantation is lawful in this state, and neither the state nor any political subdivision of the state shall prohibit the use of any such drug or device or the disposition of such product.”

Unfortunately, having a simple conversation around this complex topic has become impossible. Senate Democrats tried to pull up a gotchya bill that would have changed nothing about Kansas law. But now they want to paint conservatives as being in opposition. IVF is a complex issue that calls for a genuine, factual, compassionate conversation. Sadly, that is not what is happening today.

One other thing that abortion advocates could possibly be referring to with their wild claims is a bill that we introduced to ensure that moms receive child support for pregnancy-related expenses while their baby is in utero. Not a crazy idea, right? When we first introduced it, Democrats even said it was a good idea. But by the time it got to committee, they had changed their tune. They had decided that this bill was somehow a ploy to recognize the life of the unborn child & therefore limit abortion. In reality, we already have laws on the books that would have done that (and were on the books when the Supreme Court created an unlimited right to abortion in our Kansas Constitution) if that’s truly what we were after.[1] But genuinely, we want to help moms who may not have the resources to care for their children, and we think the father is in the best position to provide that support.

What did pro-life legislators actually do?

Pro-life legislators voted to ensure pregnant women have access to child support.

Pro-life legislators voted to actually help women with difficult pregnancies.

Pro-life legislators voted to make adoption more affordable by expanding tax credits for prospective parents.

Pro-life legislators voted to ensure babies born alive receive medical treatment.

Now, none of this fits the abortion industry’s narrative that we don’t care about women. The facts don’t lie. This is the honest truth about how these legislators voted and what they did. And if you don’t believe me, follow the links. Look for yourself and come to your own conclusion. Because I’m not ashamed of the record and the facts. I’m proud of how these legislators have worked to honor and support moms, dads, and children.

And maybe you do believe me. But maybe your neighbor down the street is confused. I encourage you to share the truth with them. They deserve to know the truth!
