Topeka, Kan.

March 26, 2024 – The Kansas House passed S.B. 394 today to protect children online from materials that are harmful to them. The bill requires any website that knowingly hosts, shares, or distributes material that is harmful to minors and that material appears on 25% of the webpages viewed per month to verify that the viewers are over the age of 18. Eight other states have passed similar laws. S.B. 394 passed with bipartisan support 92-31. It already passed the Senate 40-0. It now goes to Governor Kelly’s desk.

Brittany Jones, Director of Policy and Engagement, Kansas Family Voice:

“Kansas families are facing the daunting task of protecting their children from a host of harms online–online pornography being the top of that list for many families. The average age of exposure is just twelve years old. The majority of this exposure is accidental. Even the most diligent parents struggle to protect their children from this industry that is profiting off their children. We must stand up for our children.

Similar laws have been upheld in another states, most recently by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Families deserve our help as they protect Kansas children from this harmful content. A growing group of diverse individuals are recognizing the need for bills like S.B. 394. Big tech doesn’t want bills like this to pass because it forces them to do what they should be doing already–protecting kids rather than profiting from them. We are thankful that both chambers passed this important bill with overwhelming support. We call on Governor Kelly to protect Kansas kids and sign S.B. 394 into law.”

Kansas Senate works together to protect kids from online pornography

Topeka, Kan.

February 15, 2024 – The Kansas Senate passed S.B. 394 today to protect kids online from materials that are harmful to them. The bill requires any website that knowingly host, shares, or distributes material that is harmful to minors and that material appears on 25% of the webpages viewed per month to verify that the viewers are over the age of 18. Eight other states have passed similar laws. S.B. 394 passed with bipartisan support ___________. It now goes to the House for a vote.

Brittany Jones, Director of Policy and Engagement, Kansas Family Voice:

“Kansas families are tasked with the daunting task of protecting their children from a host of harms online. One of the most pervasive and clear harms is online pornography. We know that 2/3 of children are accessing porn by the time they are seventeen. The pervasiveness of porn & the ensuing harms are ever increasing in our culture.

S.B. 394 is a commonsense safeguard to protect Kansas children. Age verification is used in many other areas of our lives. This bill comes alongside parents and helps them protect their kids. In time in which so many issues divide us, protecting kids online from a predatory pornography industry shouldn’t. We are thankful for the overwhelming bipartisan support this bill saw in the Senate & look forward to the opportunity for the House to take up this bill.”
