Kansas House passes SB 233 to provide help and not harm to Kansas kids

Topeka, Kan.

March 13, 2024 – Yesterday was national Detransitioner Awareness Day, and today, the Kansas House passed S.B. 233 to protect kids from harmful, experimental gender transition procedures or chemicals. This bill ensures that children cannot receive surgeries, cross sex hormones, or puberty blockers for the purpose of treating gender dysphoria. Children’s access to mental health services are protected. More than 20 states have already passed similar laws. S.B. 233 passed with bipartisan support 80-40 with four Republicans absent. It now goes to the Senate for a vote.

Brittany Jones, Director of Policy and Engagement, Kansas Family Voice:

“Kansas children deserve help, and not harm, when struggling to accept their biological sex. We know that there are many individuals who are detransitioning across the country.  They are raising the alarm that rushing children into puberty blockers, cross sex hormones, and even surgeries have long term consequences and that many children later regret.

We need to give children time to treat underlying health concerns and receive appropriate mental health care once diagnosed with gender dysphoria. There have been new reports that the very bodies who were supposed to be setting the standards to protect children knew that the children could not consent to the procedures. Even the United Kingdom, yesterday, said it would stop providing  puberty blockers to children for this purpose. Kansas children deserve better than these experimental and harmful procedures and medicines. I applaud the state for standing with more than twenty other states in protecting Kansas children.”
