If you are like me, there are many things you pray for on a regular basis. These often include our families, friends, jobs, the church we attend, and many similar items. However, there is often something missing in our prayers; our nation.
I think you would agree that our nation is in need of continual prayers, but it’s easy to forget. In that regard, I have good news for you. May 3rd is National Day of Prayer, which is dedicated to praying for the various facets of our great nation. This event reminds us once a year to focus on our country and thank God for the freedoms we share, as well as the challenges we face as Americans.
This year’s National Day of Prayer event in North Dakota is again the result of a national proclamation by the President and by our Governor. Every state governor, plus the governors of several U.S. territories, typically sign similar proclamations. It is estimated that in recent years over two million people attended more than 30,000 observances.
National Day of Prayer is critically important for our nation, as it reminds us that our founding fathers were people of faith and that they established our great country on these principles. As George Washington stated, “Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor…unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions, to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our national government a blessing to all the People”.
The principles of freedom and liberty that established our country find their roots in our faith, and our faith is sustained and strengthened through prayer.
Our state’s National Day of Prayer event will focus on seven key areas: government, church, business, military, family, education, and media. The event will be held on Thursday, May 3rd, from 12:00-1:00pm in Memorial Hall at the State Capitol. Last year over 300 North Dakotans attended the event, including many young men and women from our local schools. There is no need to register, just come down and participate.
