This poignant but peaceful moment captures protestors and police officers kneeling together in prayer for their community and in memory of George Floyd. What a moving reminder of the power of prayer which invites everlasting change. We wanted to share with you Kansas Family Voice’s prayer today and encourage you to join us as brothers and sisters in Christ to boldly approach His throne of grace with prayer for our nation:
We all know the biblical principle Martin Luther King summarized so eloquently: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” We feel the truth of JFK’s words “that the rights of every man are diminished when the rights of one man are threatened.” That is why, amidst the heartbreak of a nation and from the confusion and chaos the enemy has stoked into raging flames, we are so thankful to serve a God who hears. A God who hears the lament of a mother who has lost her son and the prayers of a nation collectively groaning for justice and peace . . . .
We are thankful we serve a God who sees. Who sees the hearts of our neighbors who seek to lend legitimacy to their voice through peaceful protest. The One who sees our good and decent brothers in blue who have dedicated their lives to protecting and serving their neighbors . . . .
Perhaps, most of all we can be thankful we serve a God of Justice. A God whose Justice is righteous and holy and perfect and which is served to all people on the earth equally, without respect to status, position, or skin color.
It is to the God who hears, sees, and delivers Justice that we cry out.
We cry out to You, God our Father, for the sake of Your people—all those united by the powerful name of Jesus Christ. We cry out to You to work Justice. Justice for George Floyd and his blood that was needlessly spilled in the streets. . .and all the ones who have come before him. Vengeance belongs to You alone. May Your people know only goodness and righteousness can invite compassion and peace.
We cry out to You for the sake of Americans—all those united upon the cornerstones on which our nation was built. We are one nation under God where all men are created equal. You have given equally to all men the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We cry out for mercy. Mercy for our neighbors who have lost their safety, dignity, and even livelihoods in the tumultuous aftermath of George Floyd’s death.
Finally, we cry out to You for the sake of our leaders in government, and all those who have taken an oath to protect and serve. We pray for these servants of the people and that You help them to carry forth their duties to value, respect and protect our lives and our freedoms in goodness and with self-control.
Forgive us for sinning against one another. May You remind Your people today –true power and strength is in peace and we can trust You to deliver Justice. May You, the God of hope, wipe away our tears and restore to us brotherly and sisterly love for our neighbors. Fill us with the light of all joy and peace that only You can give. May we carry it with us and spread it wherever we go.
In the powerful name of Jesus, Amen.
