It’s a new year and with a new year comes a new legislative session in Kansas and a fresh agenda for KFV.
For those of you new to the process, most state legislators are part time legislatures, meaning they meet for set number of days for less than half the year. Originally the federal legislature had a similar schedule. There is a lot of wisdom in this abbreviated schedule, with a goal of limiting the size and scope of government – not to mention how much more difficult travel used to be.
In the modern era, it means that we are about to embark on a 90 day sprint. Of course, things happen outside the Kansas Legislature’s 90 day session, but the bulk of the policy work we do every year happens during these 90 days.
This forces us to be clear on our goals and focused on our objectives.
And we have an exciting and bold plan for this year. Our primary objectives are:
- Finally passing a law to protect children from dangerous and experimental gender procedures and chemicals;
- Protecting children, parents, and teachers from transgender ideology in schools;
- Creating a centralized resource directory and a team of trained specialists available virtually to support expectant parents, including foster and adoptive families, who need economic, social, medical, or community supports for healthy family formation;
- Creating a child tax credit;
- Ensuring moms receive child support for pregnancy related expenses;
- Protect adoptive/foster families from religious discrimination;
- Protect the conscience rights of doctors who object to performing gender reassignment surgeries;
- Explore options for expanding educational freedom for families
- Explore options reforming our judicial selection process
- Working to stop Medicaid Expansion and expansive medical marijuana policies that hurt families.
More details about these plans will be forthcoming but we can’t do this without you. Make sure you are following us on social media and are receiving our emails with action alerts to contact your legislators.
And one reminder about our prayer event happening on Thursday, January 9th at the Capitol in Topeka. Join our Church Ambassador Network Team to cover the upcoming session in prayer! Coffee and pastries will be available at 9:30.
